Fires, Floods, and a Pandemic have caused us to cancel a Visiting Gardens trip to Santa Barbara since 2018. Twenty lucky ladies had their names drawn by lottery to take this trip, April 12-14, 2022. We have coordinated the garden and home visits with Sharon Bradford the Santa Barbara Visiting Gardens chair. Sharon has done a wonderful job of planning a variety of homes belonging to Santa Barbara Garden Club members. Will will also have the unique opportunity to visit “Bellosguado” which was the magnificent property of the eccentric copper baroness Huguette Clark. The book “Empty Mansions” by Bill Dedham is recommended reading to enhance our visit. We will end our trip on Thursday with lunch and a tour of our member Francie McCarthy’s wonderful home and garden. Garden History and Design - Garden History and Design “The GCA Garden History & Design Committee uses photography, research, the study of good design practices, educational and lecture programs, and internships to develop an appreciation of America’s gardens. The Committee works closely with the Smithsonian Institute’s Archives of American Gardens to document cultivated gardens throughout the country.” In 2020 GCA became a founding partner of Olmsted 200, the national bicentennial celebration of the 200th birthday of Frederick Law Olmsted which is April 26 of this year. Member garden clubs were invited to celebrate Olmsted by participating in the GCA initiative PARKS: Where Nature Meets Community. Clubs have been encouraged to develop a community park project to benefit their local community as well as to study the life and design principles of Frederick Law Olmsted. The Pasadena Garden Club joined the Olmsted Celebration by inviting Professor Christine O’Hara from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, an Olmsted scholar, to speak to our membership on the life and work of Olmsted. Monthly club newsletters discussed the Olmsted design principles. A biography of Olmsted by Witold Rybczynski was selected to be read and discussed by interested club members. The city of Pasadena was approached about a park project and several possible projects have been identified but the process has been very slow. We are confident, however, that the PGC will be able to partner with the city in the near future on a park project to benefit our community. It was a joint project between the Pasadena Garden Club, who supplied the funds and the architectural design by Myron Hunt and the City of Pasadena, who supplied the materials and manpower. The building’s walls include boulders from the Arroyo, and the original roof shakes were cut from fallen trees in the upper canyon. Virtually all the lumber came from the bicycle track built inside the Rose Bowl for the 1932 Olympics. After a devastating fire in 1985, La Casita was repaired and restored by the city, and the Pasadena Garden Club assumed the responsibility for the design and installation of the Isabelle Green/Yosh Befu garden. In 1988, the garden was formally dedicated. It demonstrates the use of California native and non-native plants to produce a garden of beauty and horticultural interest. The garden is separated into a rainwater only section, a low water use garden and a moderate water use garden. Additionally, there is a charming Butterfly Garden re-designed and installed in 2010. This sanctuary brings visitors from the Arroyo trails up the main garden. Maintained by the Pasadena Garden Club until 1994, the La Casita Foundation has maintained the garden with substantial funds, labor and love given by the Pasadena Garden Club, its members and community donors. The Foundation today is dedicated to returning the use of La Casita to the neighborhood and the non-profit community organizations, for which it was intended. In 1976, La Casita was declared a Pasadena Cultural Heritage Landmark. The building was completely renovated in the summer of 2014 through a joint venture between the Foundation and the City of Pasadena. The Lower Arroyo Seco, including La Casita, has now been placed on the National Register of Historic Places. Each member of the Pasadena Garden Club volunteers throughout the year as a requirement of membership. Not only do our members work in the garden, the Club also supports the garden financially each year with profits from our benefits. The purpose of the Pasadena Garden Club is to stimulate the knowledge and love of gardening; to share the advantages of association by means of open meetings, conferences, correspondence and publications; to restore, improve and protect the quality of the environment, through programs and actions in the fields of environment, conservation, civic improvements and education. History Created by a group of friends interested in gardening, community development, and pride of the city, the Pasadena Garden Club (PGC) met for the first time on June 28, 1916. Throughout the club’s 100-year history, conservation of natural resources has been a priority for our Southern California club. Founding club members were pioneers in recognizing the importance of watershed restoration with the early 20th-century preservation of the scenic Arroyo Seco. Pasadena Garden Club member, Minerva Hamilton Hoyt (1866-1945), was the force behind the founding of California’s 794,000-acre Joshua Tree National Park. Throughout the 1930s she worked tirelessly to educate people about desert plant qualities and to create parks that preserved fragile desert vegetation. PGC has hosted Zone XII meetings, a Shirley Meneice Horticulture Conference and in 1969, the Garden Club of America Annual Meeting. Club member, Mrs. Jerome K. Doolan, was GCA President 1968-1971. The club logo contains the native plant Carpenteria californica. Our Special events calendar is based on a four-year rotation. These activities include Doorways and Dining which is a popular tour of members’ homes and gardens. Garden Club of America flower shows are organized by PGC and display entries from GCA members from around the country. These shows are open to the public. The Club also holds a plant sale every four years. These sales usually occur in the Fall. The fourth-year is an off-year with no major special event. The proceeds from these events support our community donations including La Casita del Arroyo and local gardens.
